TAINS
Tohoku University's TAINS (Tohoku University Academic/All-round/Advanced Information Network System) has been in service since 1988 and was the first large-scale campus-wide network in Japan. In 1995, TAINS95 (SuperTAINS) based on ATM architecture (622 Mbps) was established. In 2002, TAINS/G with GbE technology and TDM/WDM (8-16 Gbps) started. Its successor since 2009 is StarTAINS which links the center to all major buildings in the widely-spread six campuses.

Promotion of Information infrastructure in Tohoku University
Tohoku University has established the "Tohoku University Information Infrastructure Action Plan" in November 2007. The Center plays a part of promotion of information infrastructure of the University to carry out the plan.
The action plan focuses on "improvement of information infrastructure" and "construction of electronic office" to promote an information infrastructure, and advances four policies: "planned development of information network system," "establishment of university-wide authentication system with unified identification," "improvement of administrative process by establishment of Tohoku University Portal and use of groupware," and "systematic development of management information systems."

Regional Network
The Tohoku Open Internet Community, TOPIC, is a community which operates internetworking of campus networks of universities and colleges in Tohoku district and connects with national internet backbone networks to support members' use of internet.
